19: OMAR

BEING A SENIOR in college is a mixed bag. It’s crazy fun and super stressful. It feels like everyone’s talking about grad school or entry-level business positions, but I’m trying to live in the now. Unfortunately, the now consists of multiple soccer games and practices, dress rehearsals for the play I’m helping direct, and trying to sort out my feelings for Sly.

I don’t know how I got into this situation. It’s a cliché story: hooking up with your best friend’s boyfriend’s little brother because he needed practice in the play you’re directing since he’s touch averse and asexual. See? A tale as old as time!

Except Sly likes having sex, at least sometimes. And he really likes it with me. Damn, for a gray-ace virgin, that dude’s mouth is fantastic. But even if he wanted something more, relationships aren’t for me. I still have the sour taste in my mouth of having feelings for her. On top of that, it’s soccer-incest, bro-code violations, and all that. I just have to keep reminding myself of the reasons.

Soccer is a good distraction. My favorite game with the guys I love more than anything in the world always tends to put me at ease. It’s only really stressful when Coach chews us out for losing. This season, however, we’ve been on fire, losing only one preseason game and one actual season game. The KU Panthers haven’t made it this far in years, and today we’re getting on the bus having just won the semifinal.

“Let’s go, boys! Finals, baby!” Kareem howls as he gets on the bus, and we all cheer.

“Whoop whoop!” Landon shouts from behind him.

“Alright, alright, settle down,” Coach Dacks announces, finally getting on. “Let’s get into it.” We all take our seats and listen intently. “You’ve all been playing exceptionally well. I’m proud of you all, but we’re not done yet. We’re in the fight of your college careers in two days. Now’s not the time to get cocky or complacent. Take tomorrow off and get some rest. We’re meeting here at six a.m. sharp so we can hit the road to Maryland.”

There are murmurs all around. “Go ahead,” Coach Dacks adds, reluctantly. “You can celebrate…We’re Division 2 regional finalists.”

He plugs his ears and winces, and everyone shouts. “Eastern Regional Finals, BABY!” Kareem and Landon howl. Everyone’s laughing and applauding as Coach sits down.

“In two days?” I ask Paul next to me. “So Friday I’ll be away from campus?”

“Yeah.” He looks puzzled. “Why? What’s…Oh yeah, aren’t you directing a play or something?”

I bite my lip and look down. “Yeah, something like that.” Now that I’m not on the field, worry has set in. I’ll be missing the opening night of the play, the project I put my heart and soul into for months. How’s Aggie going to react? And, worse, what will Sly think?
